Fiat Punto (99 - 06)

It looks better and, on the inside, the quality of the materials, the space and the design all represent advances. This was considered to be the best hatchback on the market in its time. It is practical, spacious, easy to drive and inexpensive to buy and run. And it is an ideal car for learner drivers. It has good handling and decent ride quality as well as a fine boot. The engines are all excellent whether nipping around city streets or on the motorway. The 1.2 litre petrol is the most popular, developing 60bhp and with a top speed of 96mph. Still a fine second-hand buy.

• Plenty of cabin space; you can seat five
• It’s easy to drive and park
• Definitely better than the previous model in all aspects
• It doesn’t cost a fortune to buy or keep on the road
• The cabin is well designed and comfortable
• Decent sized boot for a small hatchback

What we don't like

• Tainted by reliability reputation that Fiat had
• The pillars at the rear are too big and can impose on visibility
